The T20 format is mainly considered the game of the batters. But lately, bowlers have also shown their importance and presence in this format. The pacers have also stated to learn slow balls and yorkers to succeed in this format wildly.
The cricketing world has undoubtedly had its fair share of great cricketers throughout history. Many belligerent batters have lived up to their reputation; therefore, it is only suitable that the bowlers aspire to be at the same level as them. Many bowlers nowadays have variations in their repositories to face the challenges of these batsmen on the playing field.
Over the past few years, we have seen a dramatic revolution when it comes to the art of spin bowling. They are the ones who are taking a big chunk of wickets in the middle overs and restricting the flow of runs regularly. We have seen various great spinners in the entire IPL history, and most of them have now become an integral part of their respective side. Today cricket match highlights also show us important stats about the spinner’s great past performances, but still, they never used to be in the limelight after all these.
It is a challenging task to select the top 5 best spinners in the entire IPL history. But going through every aspect, we have prepared the following list.
1. Amit Mishra
Amit Mishra had never been that successful in the blue jersey, but when it comes to IPL, he is a genuine legend. His sheer IPL performance proves this fact. Amit Mishra is the second-highest wicket-taker in the IPL, just after Lasith Malinga.
In his entire IPL career to date, Mishra has taken hattricks three times, which is the most by any bowler. Amit Mishra is the last proper old-school leg-spinner in the IPL; he turned 38 and is on the verge of retirement. He is a bowler who still believes in flighting the ball to deceive the batters and he did this on various occasions. The main question that started to rise around him now is how much performance has still left within him for the Delhi Capitals side in the upcoming seasons. To date, he played 150 IPL matches where he takes 160 wickets in total.
2. Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravi Ashwin was the first spinner who gained limelight from the IPL and now he has become a legend in the Indian team for his sheer performance throughout his career. Under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Ashwin has delivered the best performances in his IPL career for the Chennai Super Kings team. Later, he repeated his same performance for team India under MSD captaincy.
In his early days, he helped the CSK team win their IPL trophies but after he moved out to other teams and there his performance dipped quite a bit. Now he is with the Delhi Capitals side, but he cannot deliver the same performance he did earlier. Ashwin to date has taken 138 wickets from 154 matches.
3. Sunil Narine
Sunil Narine is the best mystery off-spinner that the IPL fans have ever seen in the entire history. In his pick form, he was tough to face by any standard of the batsman. Though in recent times, his deception has become a bit less, still he is a bowler which every batter respect while playing because of his numerous variations.
After his bowling action was called illegal, his bowling was not that like the previous one. But in recent times, he has again started to return to his original form. Narine also has sharpened his batting skill and become quite effective in the opening position for the KKR team for a few years now. Still, Sunil Narine can be called the best off-spinner of the T20 format without hesitation. To date, he played 120 matches for KKR and took 127 wickets but the main highlighting point is his economy rate, which is just 6.77 only.
4. Yuzvendra Chahal
Yuzvendra Chahal, popularly known as Yuzi Chahal is another gift of the IPL to the Indian cricket team. Though his recent performances for the Indian team are not up to the mark, his IPL career is still at its peak. In the 2020 IPL season, he took 21 wickets for the RCB team.
In 2022, he changed his team and came to the Rajasthan Royals and again started to show his presence to everyone through his splendid performance. But the main concern that is revolving around him is how many seasons he can hold up his performance in IPL, as his international form has recently dipped quite a bit and he is out of the team also for his several poor outings. Chahal played a total of 99 matches in his IPL Career and has been able to take 121 wickets.
5. Rashid Khan
Rashid Khan is only just 22 years old, but his performances are indicating that he will become a T20 great shortly. In his short career, he has already tasted success in various leagues all around the world, and IPL is one among all. Rashid’s style of bowling can remind you of the traditional leg-spin style because he likes to bowl flighted deliveries and wants the batsman to deceive in the air.
Another strength is his accurate length and quick bowling hands through the air which makes the batters confused. Rashid has already become an asset for every team that he plays because he can make any batsman out when he is trying to defend him, which makes him a more unique and tough bowler to face for any batsman. Till 2022, he has played 62 IPL matches where he has taken 75 wickets at a miserly economy of 6.24 per over.
This is the list of top 5 spinners in the entire IPL history. There are many great spinners like Harbhajan Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Varun Chakravarthy, Brad Hogg and many others who also provided many match-winning performances to their teams. But the inclusion of all is not possible. This list has been made by going through all statistics and records of each of these players and also, their effectiveness for their respective franchises.
