Fast bowling is an important component of cricket. Known for their aggressiveness and high spirits, fast bowlers are a treat to watch for all cricket fans around the globe. They generally bowl during the start and the end of an innings. Like other types of bowling, fast bowlers vary as well. There are two types of fast bowlers, swing bowlers and seam bowlers. They are further categorised by the speed that they bowl at, medium, fast-medium and fast bowlers. A few years ago, India was devoid of capable fast bowlers and was known for their spin bowling. But in recent times, India is a hotspot for fast bowling. India has many rising fast bowlers along with their current lot and they are able to dominate in foreign conditions as well.   1.  Jasprit Bumrah

The Indian fast bowler who is at the top of our list is none other than Jasprit Bumrah. He was born on 6 December 1993 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India to his father, Jasbir Singh, and his mother, Daljit Bumrah. The 28-year-old pacer made his ODI debut against Australia on 23 January 2016, his T20I debut on 26 January 2016 against Australia and his Test debut on 6 January 2018 against South Africa. Bumrah is known for his unusual bowling action and his capability to consistently bowl accurate yorkers. Till now, he has played 30 Test matches, 70 ODI matches and 57 T20I matches for India. He has taken a total of 314 wickets in his international career across all formats. Bumrah currently holds the record for being the first bowler to take 5 wickets or more in a Test innings in Australia, South Africa and England during the same calendar year. Recently, in a Test match against England, he scored 35 runs in a single over and holds the record for the most runs scored in a single over in a Test match.

Coming second on our list of best fast bowlers in Indian cricket is Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He is known for efficacy in the starting overs and his ability to swing the ball both ways. Bhuvneshwar was born on 5 February 1990 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India to a Gurjar family. He made his ODI debut in a crucial match against Pakistan on 30 December 2012, his Test debut against Australia on 22 February 2013 and his T20I debut on 25 December 2012 against Pakistan. Till now he has played 121 ODI matches, 73 T20I matches and 21 Test matches for India and gathered 281 wickets across all formats. Bhuvneshwar is the first Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul in all three formats. He played a key role in winning the 2013 Champions Trophy for India. And recently in June 2022, in the T20I series against Ireland, Bhuvneshwar was appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian team.

  1.  Mohammed Shami

Capturing the third spot in our list is the right-arm fast-medium Indian bowler Mohammed Shami. Shami was born on 3 September 1990 in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, India, and played his first Ranji Trophy match in the 2010-11 season for Bengal. He has taken 9 wickets in his Test debut match against West Indies on 6 November 2013, the most by an Indian pacer on debut. He made his ODI debut against Pakistan on 6 January 2013 and became the fastest Indian bowler to take hundred ODI wickets. He made his T20I debut against Pakistan on 21 March 2014 and has played 17 T20I matches till then. Shami has played 60 Test matches and taken 216 wickets at a healthy average of over 27. Furthermore, he holds the record for having taken the most consecutive 4-wicket hauls in ODI cricket. The 31-year-old has played 79 ODI matches and taken 151 wickets at an average of just above 25.

The Indian fast bowler holding our fourth spot in the list is Umesh Yadav. Being born on 25 October 1987 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India, the experienced Indian fast bowler has played 52 Test matches, 75 ODI matches and 7 T20I matches for India in the international circuit till now. The 34-year-old played his first ODI match against Zimbabwe on 28 May 2010, his first Test match on 6 November 2011 against West Indies and his first T20I match against Sri Lanka on 7 August 2012. Umesh has taken 273 international wickets across all formats, including three 5 wicket hauls, while playing for India. He had an extremely successful 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup tournament, having taken 18 wickets and being the highest wicket-taker for India in the tournament.

  1.  Mohammed Siraj

The Indian fast bowler ranking fifth on our list is the right-arm medium-fast bowler, Mohammed Siraj. Siraj was born on 13 March 1994 in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. He made his Test debut against Australia on 26 December 2020 and in his first Test series, he took a five-wicket haul. Siraj made his T20I debut on 4 November 2017 against New Zealand and his ODI debut against Australia on 15 January 2019. Although he isn’t permanent in the limited overs Indian squad, his performance in Test cricket is phenomenal. The 28-year-old has played 13 Test matches, 8 ODI matches and 5 T20I matches. And even though he is relatively new compared to other experienced bowlers, his wicket-taking ability is what makes him stand out. Till now, he has taken a total of 56 international wickets across all formats.
